WHO: Youth participants in Healthcare Alternative System’s Prevention Program WHAT: Unveiling of Sculptures Celebrating the Latino Family WHEN: Friday, June 24 from 10am-12pm WHERE: Healthcare Alternative Systems Inc. (H.A.S.) – 4534 S. Western Ave, Chicago

On Friday, June 24, Healthcare Alternative Systems, Inc (H.A.S.) will unveil life-size mosaic sculptures that celebrate the Latino Family at its Back of the Yards facility (4534 S. Western Avenue, Chicago). The sculptures were created by youth from the Back of the Yards community, who participated in a H.A.S. Youth Prevention Program last summer.

H.A.S. is the foremost provider of behavioral health services to Chicago’s Latino community, including a Youth Prevention Program that provides healthy alternatives to risky behaviors and works to instill youth with self-esteem and life skills.

H.A.S. partnered with Urban Gateways: Center for Arts Education to develop and execute the public art project. Urban Gateways teaching artist Nicole Beck worked with 12 students over a period of 2 months to create the sculptures around the theme of “La Familia de Communidad.”

“The children wanted to capture the image of family, and how we can unite as a family and as a community. That is what H.A.S. tries to do through its programs and services – reunite families and communities that have been impacted by drug and alcohol abuse,” said Azucena Granja of H.A.S. Photographs of the students working on the sculptures are available on request. Media can also attend the actual installation of the sculptures, which will be completed by the student artists under the supervision of Urban Gateways artist Nicole Beck, on June 21.
