Self Portraits / Self Acceptance

What: Visual Art residency for 8th grade students

Where: Greeley Elementary School in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood

Urban Gateways teaching artist Sonja Henderson challenged these eighth graders to look at themselves through a different lens. As part of an Urban Gateways visual arts residency, the eighth graders created self-portraits through printmaking. “It’s a great step that Miss Sonja took with them,” said classroom teacher Chris D’Alessio. “Teaching them not to be afraid of their own image, which is a challenge in this stage of their lives.” For this residency, Sonja teamed up with a social studies teacher and integrated art into their unit on political campaigns. Sonja is currently leading three other Urban Gateways residencies at Greeley, as part of social studies, science and Spanish classes.
