UG Teaching Artist Showcases Student Work at Gallery 37

By Sherre Cullen, Urban Gateways Director of Development

Sonja Henderson, long-time Urban Gateways Teaching Artist, showcased the work of her students at Gallery 37 at a reception on May 24. The sculptures were not only beautiful, but some of them were also animatronic. Austin Traylor, a 17-year-old senior at King College Prep High School, created a bird-like sculpture that moved its head from side to side and opened and closed its beak by remote control. “Miss Sonja is really supportive, and she cares about us being successful after high school,” said Austin. He plans to be an artist and will study animation at Laguna College of Art & Design in California. “I am very proud of my students. The School of the Art Institute only awards seven full scholarships and this year, four of those scholarships went to my students [from my AP Sculpture class through Gallery 37’s Advanced Arts Program],” beamed Sonja.
