This time around we’re visiting our 10th-12th grade students at Richards Career Academy in Back of the Yards. The 25 students participating in the school’s RISE program – which offers extra sports services and career/college prep to the high schoolers – spent some time with UG artist Riley Wimes, learning all the intricacies of tango, bachata, and hip-hop. In addition to demonstrating the potential for self expression through physical movement, Riley aimed to teach them about teamwork and positive outlets for their energy. He also dedicated time to discussing the cultures of Argentina (where tango originates) and the Dominican Republic (the birthplace of bachata) to give students a multicultural perspective on dance.
This residency ran from November to February and concluded with a dance showcase. Such fun! Photo slideshow plus video below.
