Traveling Minds Student Exhibition
May 6, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
On May 6, students from the Traveling Minds program with teaching artist Victoria Martinez will share their installation artwork at the Carlos and Dominguez Fine Arts Gallery in Pilsen. High school students at Benito Juarez Community Academy learned embroidery, sewing, and painting techniques with Victoria, then traveled to Orozco Community Academy, Pickard Elementary, and Casa Juan Diego to conduct embroidery workshops with younger students. Their final project is a collaborative 8’x20′ installation made of fabric and wood, comprised of patterns and images that represent students’ perspectives on Pilsen architecture and identity. The installation is currently on display at the National Museum of Mexican Art in conjunction with the Latino Art Now! Conference and Spring of Latino Art. On May 6 it will relocate to the Carlos and Dominguez Gallery for this event, which will also showcase student artwork including sketchbooks, patchwork, embroidery, and weaving that led up to the final art installation. Later the installation will enjoy stints at Pickard and Orozco before finding its final home at Benito Juarez Academy.
Please join Urban Gateways, Victoria Martinez, Ms. Paulina Camacho, and these incredibly talented student artists for a FREE reception on May 6 to celebrate artistic voice and the Traveling Minds project! RSVP preferred; please email aprescott@urbangateways.org.
