About our exhibition:
Experimental Reflections: Exploring Identity through the Arts is an exhibition of student work from Urban Gateways In-School Artist Residency programs. These residencies build collaborative partnerships between professional artists and schools to provide meaningful exploration in the arts. The exhibit features projects from three residency programs, representing schools in Chicago’s Brighton Park, Englewood, and Little Village neighborhoods. Programs were led by Urban Gateways teaching artists who worked with students in their classrooms over the course of one to two years. Each residency focused on specific mediums, such as fiber arts or photography, where students learned about textures, patterns, techniques, and cultural influences to create pieces expressing their perspectives and collective voice. Examining and celebrating Black American and Mexican history and culture, students explored themes of social justice, equity, and identity through an artistic lens, learning how to present themselves as multifaceted individuals while communicating their experiences and their relationships with the world and people around them.
