Young Chicago actors tackle London drama in Tusk Tusk

Talented young actors, a talented young playwright, and a talented Urban Gateways teaching artist? Sounds like a recipe for beauty.

Urban Gateways theater artist Jen Green has a daring and exciting project coming up. She’s directing Tusk Tusk at Piven Theatre Workshop – the American premier of a moving play by Polly Stenham, one of the youngest playwrights ever produced at London’s Royal Court Theatre.

Tusk Tusk Written by Polly Stenham; Directed by Jennifer Green September 8 – October 7, 2012 Piven Theatre Workshop, 927 Noyes Street, Evanston, IL

The story of three London siblings left to fend for themselves when their mother goes missing, this incredible piece is all about the strength of youth in the face of adversity. Broaching intense themes like mental illness, abandonment, and violence, the young actors in this Piven performance portray complex characters with powerful voices.

As providers of arts education, and as folks who frequently witness the strength and expressiveness of Chicago’s young people, we are proud to see our very own theater artist taking this bold step.

What Jen has to say about Tusk Tusk, directing, and teaching artistry:

“There is nothing more important than creating opportunity for emerging artists. Tusk Tusk is an exciting piece because it reflects my commitment to mentoring young actors not only in a classroom, but also in a professional environment. This US premiere touches on many important, relevant issues and rests on the authenticity of the performances of a very young cast. Our youngest actor is 9. My background as a teaching artist is essential in informing my directorial tact with this piece and I am grateful to have worked with so many students through Urban Gateways.”
