“Breaking the Chains” and Celebrating the Arts in South Chicago, Lakeview

I know a lot of you are getting ready to rock Chicago’s summer street festivals…why not add a community arts event to your lineup?

Two of our Community Schools, Greeley Elementary in Lakeview and EPIC Academy in South Chicago, are holding community arts festivals this Saturday (EPIC) and Monday (Greeley). The scoop:

Breaking the Chains Showcase with EPIC Academy

SATURDAY, JUNE 1, 11am-2pm

Where: Rainbow Beach Park Field House, 3111 E. 77th St. (note location change!)

Students from Urban Gateways after-school arts programs at EPIC will be featured with their work (paintings, comic books, jewelry design and more) at this open community event to “artfully dispel delusions while promoting peace.”

Students’ statement: “Our generation is being judged negatively! This has its effects which can lead to self-esteem issues, giving up and senseless violence against one another. We want to prove that we are not the stereotype! We want to help promote changing our conditions, changing misconceptions, and show the world what we ARE capable of! This showcase will be our opportunity to break the chains that bind us!”

Greeley Fine Arts Festival

MONDAY, JUNE 3, 9:45-3:15

Where: Greeley Elementary, 832 W. Sheridan Road, Chicago

Urban Gateways participates in Greeley’s fine arts fest every year, and UG staff could tell you it’s one of our favorite work days. With various arts & crafts tables and multiple teaching artists on hand to help with mural painting and more, Greeley students K-8 experience the arts in a creative outdoor environment. You can read more here, but these photos from last year might say it best:

Support community arts, community schools, and anti-violence this Saturday and Monday!
