Urban Gateways Artist-in-Residence programs build collaborative partnerships between teaching artists and schools or community-based organizations, providing meaningful exploration in the arts.

If you are interested in learning more about a partnership with Urban Gateways, please complete our Interest Form.

Our diverse and talented teaching artists develop and implement integrated curricula in visual arts, music, theater, dance, digital media, and literary arts for all types of learners. Curricula reflect both the artist’s unique skill set and input of the partner. Residencies can span from 4 to 20 weeks and fall into the following categories:

In-School Residency

Teaching artists work in partnership with a classroom teacher during instructional time to develop hands-on integrated arts experiences in a subject area.

After-School Residency

Teaching artists lead after-school classes for students in a specific art form. Typically, artists are on-site for a minimum of two hours, working with one to two groups of participants.

Community-Based Residency

Teaching artists partner with members of a community-based organization to develop hands-on art making experiences. Residencies focus on a specific art form and can integrate into the mission of the organization.

Art Forms

Our diverse roster of teaching artists lead approximately 45 unique hands-on arts experiences in dance, digital media, literary arts, music, theater, and visual arts. Browse the roster of teaching artists below to explore their specialties in particular art forms, or check out residency program examples from recent partnerships at the bottom of this page. Urban Gateways will work with you to design a residency that best fits your needs, interests, and goals.

Aligned with the Illinois Arts Learning Standards, Social-Emotional Learning Standards, and the Framework for 21st Century Learning, residency programs reflect culturally responsive teaching, youth-centered approaches, and trauma-informed practices.

Any residency program can be a stand-alone experience or combined with other arts learning opportunities, such as Workshops, Professional Development, and Touring Performances.
