Urban Gateways Artist-in-Residence programs build partnerships between teaching artists and schools/community-based organizations.

If you are interested in learning more about a partnership with Urban Gateways, please complete our Interest Form.

Artist-In-Residence programs are collaborative partnerships that bring in-depth arts exploration into schools and community settings. Teaching artists lead original curricula in a specific art form that reflect both their unique skill set and input of the partner. Residencies can span from 4 to 20 weeks and fall into the following categories:

In-School Residency
Teaching artists work in partnership with a classroom teacher during instructional time to develop hands-on integrated arts experiences in a subject area.

After-School Residency
Teaching artists lead after-school classes for students in a specific art form. Typically classes run for two hours with one or two groups of participants.

Community Residency
Teaching artists partner with members of a community-based organization to develop hands-on art making experiences. Residencies focus on a specific art form and can integrate into the mission of the organization.

Art Forms
Our diverse roster of teaching artists lead approximately 45 unique hands-on arts experiences in dance, digital media, literary arts, music, theater, and visual arts. Browse the roster of teaching artists below to explore their specialties in particular art forms, or check out the gallery of residency programs from recent partnerships. Urban Gateways will work with you to design a residency that best fits your needs, interests, and goals.

Artist-in-Residence programs align with Illinois State Learning Standards, Common Core, National Core Arts Standards, Illinois Arts Learning Standards, and the Framework for 21st Century Learning. Teaching artists engage in culturally responsive teaching and youth-centered approaches; a number of our teaching artists have also been trained in trauma-informed practices.

Any residency program can be a stand-alone experience or combined with other arts learning opportunities, such as Workshops, Professional Development, and Touring Performances.
